Counter-Strike (From Beta 6.5 to Release 1.5) (STEAM)

If you own Half-Life 1 on STEAM, you can load older releases of Counter-Strike as Half-Life 1's mods. This is a particularly useful alternative to play these versions if you do not want to use the original WON interface.

Requirements

  • Owning Half-Life on STEAM.

Installation

  1. Install Half-Life 1 (Steam).
  2. Make sure you use the steam_legacy beta branch, otherwise some visual glitch may happen!

  1. Download the releases of Counter-Strike you desire below inside the root folder of Half-Life (see below).
  2. (required for CS Beta 6.5 and CS 1.5, optional otherwise) Download the Steam Patch according to your release, and replace the files.
  3. Once you installed the desired releases of Counter-Strike, restart STEAM. You should see them in your games list.

Alternatively, here's also a download link if you want to download all the versions of Counter-Strike below already patched.

The Steam patches rename the liblist.gam file to a more "library-friendly" name, bring back their original Counter-Strike background, and also restores the icon on the Steam Library.

Troubleshooting

I see blue sparks!

You are using the default HL25's build, which contains minor visual glitches clientside, such as this one! You should use the steam_legacy beta branch to fix these issues.

The models are frozen upon a death in CS Beta 6.x !

This is a visual glitch that seem to only affect player animations. It also affected players during its official release back then, and was fully fixed in CS Beta 7.0. Unfortunately no solution to fix this issue has been found yet.

Why is the mod name "*************" on my STEAM Friends?

VALVe does not want players to be mistaken between "Counter-Strike" (the 1.6 release) and the mod (also named Counter-Strike). That is why it is purposely censored by STEAM in the Friends tab. Thankfully, it has no incidence at all, and you can even correct this yourself.

Download the optional patch for your release of Counter-Strike, and replace the files.

How can I differenciate which version of Counter-Strike I'm playing on Steam?

You need to modify the liblist.gam folder of the required mods! Download the optional patch for your release of Counter-Strike, and replace the files.

Are these mods compatible with the Counter-Strike mods "for Steam" found on Moddb?

Not at all (unless you change the folder name)! We don't want to follow an outdated folder naming scheme, especially after the Preservation project on Github.
